Associate Professor of Art History, Dr. Gustav Medicus, recently published an article 鈥淭he meanings of Domenico Beccafumi鈥檚 鈥楴ativity鈥 in S. Martino, Siena鈥 in The Burlington Magazine, which is the world鈥檚 leading monthly publication devoted to fine and decorative arts. The article appeared in the August 2021 issue, which centered around art in Renaissance Italy. According to their website, publishes concise, well-written articles based on original research, presenting new works, art-historical discoveries and fresh interpretations.

鈥淧ainted for the Marsili Chapel in S. Martino, Siena, Beccafumi鈥檚 鈥楴ativity鈥 retains its ambitious architectural marble frame by Lorenzo di Mariano, datable to 1523. The links between the iconography of the painting and frame can be explained by the desire of the patron, Anastasia di Nanni Marsili, to commemorate her husband and son. The way the Virgin is depicted was to influence visual representations of the Immaculate Conception, a doctrine closely associated with Siena,鈥 stated Dr. Medicus in the article.
