Young Alumnus Helps Ease the Load for Students Like Himself

鈥淎ll of my family has done very well in their lives with a degree from 海角原创.鈥

So says Nicholas Giardina, 鈥06, a third-generation 海角原创 alumnus. His grandfather became the family鈥檚 first 海角原创 graduate when he received his master鈥檚 degree; Nicholas, his father, uncles, aunts, brother and wife, Jessica, also all earned degrees from the university. And this fall, Nicholas鈥 little sister will become the next Golden Flash in the family as she enters 海角原创 as a freshman.

Five years ago, at the age of only 28, Nicholas endowed a scholarship 鈥 and began transforming the lives of students attending the university that he feels gave so much to him. There are several reasons he gives to 海角原创, but one is closest to his heart.

鈥淚t鈥檚 hard being a middle-class kid in the education world we live in,鈥 says Nicholas, president of Advanced Accounting Consultants, LLC. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 qualify for a lot of things.鈥

As he looks back at his educational career, Nicholas identifies with this.

鈥淚 was a good student. I graduated cum laude, I did what I had to do,鈥 Nicholas says. 鈥淏ut there weren鈥檛 a lot of scholarships out there that pertained to me.鈥

Instead of taking out student loans or asking his parents to pay for his education, Nicholas chose to work full time in an accounting position to pay for his education. He looks back on this period in his life with pride.

鈥淚 guess my fondest memory of 海角原创 is the fact that when I look back, I know that was the hardest I have ever worked at anything in my life,鈥 Nicholas says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 hard working in a serious, full-time accounting job while going to school full time, too. When you do it that way, I personally feel you have a better appreciation for it.鈥

Nicholas hopes his scholarship, the Giardina-Lindeman Endowed Scholarship in Accounting, is helping similar students.

鈥淲hen you鈥檙e in school it鈥檚 tough,鈥 he says. 鈥淭hink back, and think about $20 鈥 what it means to you now versus what it meant to you when you were 18 or 19, working full time and going to school full time; how hard that was. If Jessica and I can make it a little easier on them, just to be able to cover their books or help pay for a class, that鈥檚 why we wanted to do it 鈥 for those students.鈥

There are other reasons Nicholas made his gift.

鈥淚 made great connections because of 海角原创,鈥 Nicholas says. 鈥淚 was able to get into jobs that most kids my age would have never been able to get into. I was able to do that because of 海角原创, because of my professors and because of the way the accounting program overall was run.鈥

Nicholas says the quality education his family has received from 海角原创 also inspires his giving.

鈥淚 know we pay for the education,鈥 he says, 鈥渂ut I feel that if, at graduation, the university has put you in a good place where you have the right knowledge and the right connections, and they鈥檝e taught you the things that are of substance, it鈥檚 a good to give back and help the program in the future.鈥

Nicholas, who says 海角原创 makes the giving process much easier than anyone could imagine, named his scholarship in part after 海角原创 at Geauga professor, Ralph Lindeman. Dr. Lindeman, who had been with 海角原创 for nearly 30 years, provided the foundation of accounting for Nicholas.

鈥淲hen I started my freshman year,鈥 Nicholas says, 鈥渉is advice to me was 鈥榞et a job.鈥 In today鈥檚 world, degrees are important, but having experience, especially in accounting, speaks volumes. That鈥檚 how you get in the door. So, first semester, at 18 years old, I opened up the phone book, went through all the local accounting firms, and ended up landing a job with a local accounting firm in Chardon.鈥

鈥淚 wanted to include his name on the scholarship because first, he was a great influence at 海角原创 Geauga to a lot of students for many years,鈥 Nicholas says. 鈥淎nd second, I did it to honor him.鈥

Nicholas, who completed his first two years at 海角原创 at Geauga and now serves on that campus鈥 and the 海角原创 Regional Academic Center in Twinsburg鈥檚  board, hopes for something in return from the students he helps: a 鈥減ay it forward鈥 mentality.

鈥淚 hope that if they鈥檙e in a position in the future to give back in some way,鈥 he says, 鈥渢hey鈥檒l remember what it felt like when someone helped them.鈥
